Hathaway cast as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises
Wally Pfister, the director of photography, reports that when asked if he shot the Catwoman screentest, Pfister responded: "Yeah.. She's phenomenal. This is something she wanted and wanted to show Chris, 'I'm the one for this job' and she did an incredible job... she is a great, great actress and she looked phenomenal in the wardrobe. It's going to be amazing with her."
Hathaway was on a shortlist of actresses who auditioned for the film, along with Jessica Biel, Kate Mara, Charlotte Riley and Keira Knightley.
Anne is working out five days a week. She’s taking it very seriously and wants her body in tip-top condition. ‘Secretly she hopes to upstage Halle Berry, who last played Catwoman. She’s doing dance classes, weight-training and cardio – she wants to be the sexiest Catwoman ever.

‘The Dark Knight Rises’: Christian Bale Praises Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman
After photos of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises” surfaced in August, doubts arose over whether the 29–year-old actress was right for the feline fatale. However, Anne’s co-star, Christian Bale, says he more than approves of her performance.
“I had plenty of scenes with Anne and I was there when we did the screen test for her,” Christian, star of the Christopher Nolan-directed Batman films, told the Philippine Inquirer. “The thing that I said to Chris [Nolan] that day was that there were many very accomplished actresses who had read for the role. I’m terrible at auditions, so I’m very impressed when somebody really seems to acquire an ownership of a character without having worked on it or prepared for some amount of time.”
Christian said Anne has been tasked with the “hardest job” in the film — finding a fresh approach to Selina Kyle/Catwoman, who previously was portrayed by screen icons like Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry.
“In many ways, she has the hardest job,” he said. “There are a number of people who feel that the Catwoman role has been defined previously. So, I always saw Anne’s role as being the toughest job of any of us.”

What was "The Dark Knight Rises" casting process like for you? And how would you describe your interpretation of Selina Kyle?
I can’t talk about the interpretation because that is just a hermetically sealed secret. [She says jokingly] If you want to take on Chris Nolan, you’re more than welcome to.
The casting process for "The Dark Knight Rises" was Chris met with a bunch of girls to have a general [reading]. And then he culled the list down three-and-a-half months later to do screen tests. So everyone with XX chromosomes [women] in Hollywood was sitting on pins and needles for three-and-half months.
Then I understood he screen-tested a few of us. He tested on a Thursday, and I think the [2011] Golden Globes were that Sunday. And I didn’t mean to, but wherever I went, I just kept bumping into Chris. "I swear I’m not stalking you. I’m not trying to force your hand. I’m not reading anything into anything." But it was really nice because a bunch of people I had screen-tested with, like Wally [Pfister] the DP [director of photography] and Jordan [Goldberg] the producer — they were all nominated for "Inception." I saw them that night, and they all made a point of coming up to me to tell me how well I did.
So I thought it had gone well, but you never want to get your hopes up too high. And so a few days later, I was back in Brooklyn, my manager called me, and she goes, "Meow." And I was like "Ha ha! Oh no, wait! Really?" And she said, "Yes." And I just celebrated! Celebrated! It was one of the best days of my life.

Clearly curious about the effect of the onslaught of unofficial imagery, I was eager to get Hathaway’s take on the situation …
They just released your first official still, but we also got a ton of unofficial material from the fans hanging around the set. How does that make you feel? Is it stealing your thunder and is there any concern about revealing too much about that final product?
It’s disappointing. I think everyone feels a slight frustration with it because those stills so undercut the work that’s being done. No, no one’s nervous about it. I mean, honestly, like, wait till you see this movie. Chris is doing insane things in it. And it’s gonna be marvelous and it’s gonna be way beyond what anyone imagines that it could be. You can’t imagine the things that he’s doing, at least I couldn’t until I read the script and I was like, ‘You’re really? Okay, you’re going there!” And it’s Chris Nolan; even the picture that he released of me, that’s not everything. That’s like a tenth of what the catsuit is. And I’ve got to say, I find it frustrating and I know he finds it frustrating, but I also think that he’s having fun with it, kind of like spooning out secrets. He has a lot more control than you think.
