Before rooting your device make sure you've made ROM back-up ... i'm sure you'll need it in future.

Rooting is great for as stated before. Removing Carrier bloatware / Garbage. "IE: Sprint TV, Sprint NFL, Sprint Nascar, Verizon anything, etc etc etc.." you get the point on that.

Second it gives you the user a deeper debug level to the device. So if something is acting up you can possibly fix it your self with a little knowledge of command line applications. ADB commands can save you alot of trouble with taking a device in.

3rd you can setup deeper security vs what the carrier put on your phone. A lot of carriers as example love installing applications that are totally hidden on your phone to spy on everything you do. I am talking everything you do. Every website, every text you send out, every phone call, even follow where you go via your GPS.
Rooting gives you the power to remove that garbage.

Another non android product (That will remain nameless) that so many people love has a version of that software written so deep into the OS it can never be removed which is built in by design from the maker of the OS.

Depends on your carrier, and if you installed Mod os's like Cynogen Mod.
Stock looking versions of the os. (Bloat removed copies etc) Still pass as in warranty.
After much discussion with tech support reps of 3 of the 4 major USA carriers. They clearly stated as following;
"If it's branded on the OS as the above Carriers device and looks stock, they will warranty it."
