the max max EDGE (2g) speed is 384kbps!!! so 1stly you cant get 500kbps on 2G.. and you will not get 500kbps cuz 2G (or 2.5G ) technology doesnt support 500kbps... if u want faster speeds move up to 3G or 4G

1stly i want to tell you its not your downloading speed which you write here its your net surfing speed and the max downloading speed through idm is about 300kbps but rarely, you can improve your net surfing speed but can't improve more downloading speed
for more better speed try some other software which helps to improve your net speed as well as little more downloading speed
try
Glary utilities software and run this before start your browser and hope yo'll get a better result in next time

Technical specifications are a little bit confusing. But as you said that you have recharged your SIM with Rs.98-2G plan then how could you say that you have got a 3G SIM? I think you can't have 2G data plan on a 3G activated SIM. BSNL has got problems like temporary network errors(sometimes you can't send SMSs for a number of days and also sometimes the packet data access gets too slow). It has been observed that if you are in an area where the network reception is good then you can have nearly 3G speed with even a 2G SIM. 50kbps with a 2G plan is quite good, so you shouldn't expect more than that. And about that 3G signal you're getting is just because you're probably using a 3G enabled cellphone(like I said before it's a kind of BSNL thing.). It would have been better if you could have mentioned the device with which you're using that SIM.

@Rider__Boy That depends upon your strength of network and data plan. Downloading speed with IDM is not at all limited to 300kbps.

@peach_valley EDGE is not 2G. It's between 2G and 3G that means 2.5G and its speed specifications are rather confusing. However most of the devices use multislot class 32 which can carry a bandwidth of around 296kbps.

The speed depends on the recharge you are using. If you use 2g gprs plan then your speed will be limited whether 3g is activated or not. But if you use 3g recharge then you will get full 3g speed. I myself is using the bsnl 3g connection and therefore I can tell this from my experience.
