Hello everyone
As you might have noticed, i am completely new to this site.

Well, let's get to the problem: a friend of mine downloaded a few themes successfully to
her Sony-Ericsson w995. But then, if she wants to use them and tells it to use the
theme layout, an error message appears telling something like "Layout is not suitable
for this theme, please use another layout or theme" (very rough translation from
german^^ sorry). She tried several themes, especially listed here for her w995.
Question: Where's the problem or wrong usage of this theme?
As an example, she tried the theme named "flash menu".

Thanks in advance for your time and help

Hi tekknarf,
May be the firmware(the operating software of the phone) is old, or got corrupt. Ask her to update the W995 through computer using the Update Service. This may surely solve the problem.
Then try installing the themes.
I have no problem installing any of the themes in this phone.

try and tell.
good luck.

Hey Ketansa,
thanks for your reply
She already did a couple of times and always gets the message, that her phone
is up to date and no new updates are available at this time.
I wonder what settings did you set on your mobile, that she didn't.
Is there something to dis- or enable flash or something similar?

Hallo tekknarf, thanks,
No there is no such setting to enable or disable flash or any operation.
Can she tell which is the firmware version? the latest should be R1GA026 or R1GA028 depending upon region.
Ask her to use the UpdateService from PC, by attaching the data cable. When it says 'you already have latest firmware', click the option "install anyway" , or 're install'. This will renew her phone software and clear any errors. Ask her not to use Update service directly through phone, because it does not give option to re install the software.
Doing through PC allows you to re-update the same firmware even if it is the latest.
Do and tell.
see you soon.

Hi again Ketansa,
she did an update via PC through data cable and it installed something. After doing so
she tried the themes again and they didn't work. I asked her to check, if theres another
update waiting to be installed and suprise suprise, there was. So she installed this
also and after that, the update service told her, her phone is up to date and no new
updates are available.

I thought, well that's it, now everything will work, but ... epic fail
Still the same error. When trying to change the theme and telling the phone to use the
layout from the theme, the option is somewhat "greyed out" and if choosen, still says
that this isn't possible and she is asked to use another theme or layout instead.

If you got the same phone and the themes (especially "flash menu" from here for
example) do actually work on your phone, the only thing that comes into my mind is,
that there's possibly a problem with the firmware distributed here in germany. I will
ask her anyway to reinstall everything to get rid of a possible problem or error.

Are the actual settings transported into the new firmware or is the reinstall a
complete reset so everything has standard settings from the manufacturer?

Update: The last time she did this update, she first got the latest here, that's the 026,
and also did this twice or in other words, she reinstalled the latest version upon her
phone. And still the same error. I wonder why this is. Possibly the download from the
theme is corrupted and the file containing the layout is damaged? I will ask her to
redownload the theme and going to tell, what happened.

Edit: She redownloaded the theme and still the same error. Is it possible, that this
theme has no layout within it? How to find out? Are there files missing?

Thanks again for your help and time

Hallo Tekknarf,
No the external themes do not have the flash menu or 'theme layout'.
Only Sony Ericsson makes the Theme Layout.
Almost all the private themes you find on the net have no flash menu layout. Always disabled(greyed).
That is the reason I do not use any downloaded themes, no matter how cool the wallpapers are. I downloaded many themes from here and other websites, but just tried them once. I only like the Sony Ericsson original theme because of its original flash menu layout.
Probably you will find only three themes in the W995 from SonyEricsson which has the flash menu.

good wishes. see you.
