Nokia phones have an IM feature since ages. It was present in my former Nokia phones (2630 and 5200). My Nokia 3600 Slide is supposed to have this feature too but I can't find it anywhere. But I don't really care.
I wasn't able to use it either in my previous phones.

I don't know whether it depends on a seervice called Nokia Messaging which provides IM and e-mail solutions for Nokia phones. Nokia Messaging has just arrived to Argentina and the situation might be similar in other countries.

Some older SOny Ericsson phones had SMS chat. And some phones can have Windows Live Messenger preinstalled.

I still don't know how to Instant Msg. . . But to email from ur phone is easy.

All u do is go into messages from the main menu and there is the email option.
U then put in a valid email address and ur phone will connect to the mailbox and u will be asked to give a password.
Enter that and everytime u click onto ur email account it'll connect and update with all new emails
