My unlocked K610im from Singapore which I am now using in Canada works fine for SMS and voice and Internet.

However I cannot install new games or send picture messages (MMS).

I believe it has something to do with the fixed i-Mode (probably locked in by the Starhub provider) that I cannot seem to find a way to cripple. I searched high and low for a debranding service for this particular phone, no luck there.

i dont think imode has anything to do with it.
even though you have starhub gprs and mms settings i dont think it works on other countries.
check with starhub.
as far as i know when youre overseas the service provider will also change as indicated on your standby mode. hence that service provider's mms settings is needed.

Thanks ___m0d_, you could be right - I may not have gotten all the settings even though the media and Internet connection settings were changed to the local provider's.

They aren't too helpful with unlocked phones but I will certainly check the net for it.
