What do you think about taxes? Are they fair and justified?

Some examples of taxes (in the UK) would be on fuel, capital gains, business, inheritance, cigarettes etc etc.....

If you could eliminate a certain tax (maybe more) which would it be and why?

dont forget to mention which country you're from as different countries have different taxes!!.... and please state facts or figures from reliable sources!

Taxes are justified because government has to have money to operate and provide vital services to its citizens. They are not always fair though. The so called sin tax on cigarettes and liquor are just fine by me. Sales tax are fine as long as food and medicine are exempted from the tax. Taxes on capital gains and inheritances ought to go. Property taxes are ok on houses and business property but not on personal property. My least favorite is the income tax. My first problem with the income tax is that people such as drug dealers and prostitutes escape paying it due to the cash only nature of their business. Secondly too many loopholes are available for corporations to often not pay as much as they should. However income tax laws can be used to influence behavior. For example in the US we are allowed to deduct mortgage interest and property taxes on our homes from our income. Thus the government encourages home ownership. The income tax laws here in the US are very complicated and need to be simplified. Even the IRS doesn't fully understand all of the law.

I agree....We need to pay taxes as they will go back to us as services.

The taxation system here in the Philippines is not that complicated. However, there are lots of tax evasions happening around here. And those tax evaders are mostly those who need to pay more. In addition, some people in the government service are using the taxes for their own selfish needs.

Taxes are fair and justified if they will be used to address the needs of the constituents.

Taxes are fair and certainly justified but only to a point when you are paying Gst on top of Gst and more Gst where will it ever end??
I am a working tax paying individual who does not begrudge my hard earned tax dollars being used to help our country but there are things that it gets used for that suck.
Just my opinion...

this is also an opinion..

there are billions of people in a country. in phil, taxes are so high, yet the services... hmmm. its not that good. if we estimate the amount that they collect from every tax payer.... its more than enough to get this country to bloom, but, what happened?! why is the country still like this? its even worse...

we pay taxes. right. and it makes the price of a product more expensive. taxes, kills people. ... specifically people below the poverty line. no money, no food, no shelter. and it keeps on getting higher.

the taxes we pay.. it is supposed to help people... but its not.

TAXES are FAIR when its in the RIGHT hands.
...read between the lines,. hope you'l get what i'm saying

taxes are fair and their collection serves a purpose
however the use of tax money is sometimes unjustifiable

Nowadays, it seems impossible to go to a place where there is no concept of taxation. Here in the Philippines, almost every price of commodities has VAT (Value added tax) included. And, take note, some politicians would even consider having EVAT (Extended value added tax)!

IN my opinion, as part of what we have studied, taxation is supposed to be fair, that is, if the citizens and the collectors do their job (correctly!) If we are responsible enough, then I think it can be fair.

I'm from Mexico. And I'm student of Accounting in UNAM-FCA (the best University of Latinoamerica even of Spain and Portugal)

Well in Mexico we have many taxes, many are reasonable some aren't, some of them are excessive. Although paying taxes in Mexico comes from the Constitution, Mexican people doesn't contribute because most of them are steal in many ways or try to pay the lowest tax. Something amazing is Mexican laws of taxes are difficult to understand and always are changing and releasing many rules, sometimes are useful other aren't.
For example Mexican people contributes for having a car during a year, the tax depends on the value of your car, the number of cylinders of it and the number of used years (This tax was temporary, exists is since 1968 when Olympics Games were in Mexico).
Nowadays Mexico is paying two taxes one of them ISR and the other one is the famous IETU (I don't know how to translate or explain them), the cheapest one is ISR because you could reduce the tax with many allowed things, allowed things on ISR aren't for IETU.
In my personal opinion taxes are necessary but they should be reasonable. Also laws of taxes have to be understandable not complicated that's the problem here in Mexico and accountants have to understand them.

I think only the necessary taxes like those on cigarettes and liqour are justified. also those for services such as the NHS and emergency services are justified. However income tax is a load of bull crap because if you earn it surely to god it should be your money. They make you pay tax on everything else so why should i have to lose even more of my income to the government.

Also the inheritance tax. This is the worst tax of all. If someone leaves you something then only you should be able to get some of it, but apparently you cant because you need to pay a certain percentage to the government to keep what should be yours. Some people however cannot afford to pay the tax and so they lose what was left to them in a will. Pointless tax, mainly to make the rich, richer.
