Power is based on knowledge and makes use of knowledge; on the other hand, power reproduces knowledge by shaping it in accordance with its anonymous intentions. Power (re-) creates its own fields of exercise through knowledge.

Foucault incorporates this inevitable mutual inherence in his neologism power-knowledge, the most important part of which is the hyphen that links the two aspects of the integrated concept together.

It is helpful noting that Foucault has a textual understanding of both power and knowledge. Both power and knowledge are to be seen as de-centralised, relativistic, ubiquitous, and unstable (dynamic) systemic phenomena. Thus Foucault’s concept of power draws on micro-relations without falling into reductionism because it does not neglect, but emphasizes, the systemic (or structural) aspect of the phenomenon.

Knowledge, for me, is a power when we put this knowledge in action , and knowing how to put it in the right place.
Knowledge is the one who raised poor societies to rich one ; weak one to the strongest and so on .
There are types of people who are full of knowledge ; unfortunately, they do not evaluate this knowledge by not using it in the right place , which results a distruction .

Knowledge is defenitly power! But knowledge is nothing without acting.
This all balances out though. Take the police for example; In one part of the police department there are knowledgefull people working on profiles and examinening crime scenes, thinking out tactics and so on. While on the other side there is the mucles, who use the knowledge to do the job.

Knowledge and muscle goes hand in hand. The one will not work without the other.

Therefore, knowledge is power, but on its own, knowledge is just information.

Knowledge is power only if you know how to use it. It is comparable to any other action we take on daily bases. It's a poor example, but imagine knowing how to drive , but always taking the bus. It's just like that. Knowledge can't be a "weapon" if you keep it to yourself. Simple as that

^^^ Well said......
Knowledge can be power.....but can also render you powerless....
Sometimes you can be so educated that it blinds you to the validity of things that you may not know.....you can just pass them off as, "untrue" just because it is something that you are not familiar with.....
Knowledge is an important tool.....but as Irry said......a tool that is not used properly is as useless tennis shoes on a fish.....

everything starts with an idea, and is necessari having at lest a little bit of knowledge to debelop that idea, but watching back in the history, some of the bigest invents were made by mistake!!
So, knowledge can be power as long as u don't go crazy

There are already dozen of zedgers shared their thoughts about this topic. And I say, they raised good and valid points. We could post and debate this topic till kingdom come. But let me join the crowd -anyway,

Do we equate knowledge with instinct? Or knowledge vis-a vis wisdom? If one has abundant with knowledge do we call him/her powerful? What about those who have less, do we call him/her ignorant?

Why are we here?

A newly born infant has knowledge. They cried right after they came out from his/her mother's womb - they say, "mom, I need protection!!" It is something that you are born with. To sharpen it, one need to interact with his/her peers, environment and the world. Day by day, she/he is enriching his/her knowledge and awareness.

Knowledge is something that you give it away. It is in giving/sharing that one earns power. No one has the monopoly of everything. This is what this world is all about!

It is in sharing that you obtain power!

Quote of user: Puddster

I don't agree on this one. Knowledge is helpful, but wisdom is power.

Knowing a lot and being able to do a lot are two entirely different things, wisdom to me is the ability to put knowledge into action, which is why I aim to be wise and not clever or knowledgable.

Agree with Sir Puddster. Knowledge is just like a helpful agent and wisdom will be the generator.

Without wisdom, having too many knowledges over the limits is useless..
