But why go to all that trouble when Nokia are offering to replace the battery free of charge (even if the phone is out of warranty.)

Yup. Standard RMA procedure applies. If your battery is among those covered by the recall, all you have to do is fill out a form on the internet or call Nokia hotline. As soon as Nokia verifies it, your brand new Nokia BL-5C battery will be delivered via courier service, free of charge.
