moved from General chat

you can use Photoshop or ACDsee and other programs to edit or crop or resize your photos and use them as wallpaper

If you're not really familiar with photo or pic editing software I would suggest ACDSee to you , it's a lot easier than Photoshop and a lot cheaper too.
Try googling for "free photo editing software"" or try shareware software , with shareware you often can use the utility with all it's features for some days before you have to buy it , it's a nice way to check to see if you like the program and if your pc and you can handle it.
Good luck.

"The Gimp" has got some Photoshop-like functions and it's all for free.
Simply google it.

Like several others I use Photoshop CS, photoshop elements is a good lower cost alternative. The Gimp is free and very powerful, but not the easiest software to use.

Photoshop...a rock solid choice....The moment I saw the price tag the word GIMP started sounding really good...most times picasa does the job right....irfanview does it always and it's fast....

Also my Ubuntu Themes are completely created with GIMP.
The previous ones were done using Blender....

I also recommend ADOBE PHOTOSHOP as well... as a 3D Animator we also need to use Photo Imaging Progs for stills & illustrations, etc... Once you have learned the basics... the rest is pretty much cake along with the TONS of Plugins/Brushes/Filters that help your experience to a higher level, etc.
I personally will only use Adobe CS2 or 3 - from trying a lot of others on the market close to it... I'd rather put my skills/time towards the Higher end programs i use like Alias Maya 3D & Lightwave (to name a few)

good luck -
