UEFA:
liverpool vs real madrid 1-0
Liverpool FC once again proved they are a European force to be reckoned with after they defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Thursday.
It was a Yossi Benayoun header - created from a Fabio Aurelio free-kick eight minutes from time - that secured Liverpool the away goal that will give them confidence going into the second leg tie against the Spanish giants at Anfield in two weeks time.
In a game where not many chances were created, Liverpool played strong attacking football throughout, in a clash that Real were favoured to win.
Fernando Torres, former captain of Real's city rivals Athletico, received less than a warm reception at the Bernabeu, but created a great chance in the first half with the Reds silent assassin breaking clear forcing fellow Spaniard Iker Casilla's to make an impressive save.
Real had a goal ruled offside after 30 minutes before Xabi Alonso fired a powerful shot from just over the halfway line that was saved by Iker Casillas' fingertips.
Real coach Juande Ramos brought on Guti at halftime to try and open up the visitors and Torres, struggling after an ankle knock, gave way for Ryan Babel after an hour.
Robben shook off his markers and forced Reina to tip his long-range shot over in the 70th as Real steadily tightened their grip towards the end.
But a clumsy foul from Gabriel Heinze wide on the right gave Liverpool their chance and Benayoun's powerful header gave Casillas no chance, as Real's nine-mach winning streak was brought to an end
Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard, out for three weeks with a hamstring injury, spent most of the night watching from the bench, but was brought on by manager Rafael Benitez as a late substitute after Liverpool's Spanish winger Albert Riera limped off the field with a leg injury with just minutes to go. |
