those are versions indicating that the OS is being updated. e.g. S40v1, v2, v3, v5, v6 etc. Here the s40 OS gradually gets updated from v1 to v6. By updating the manufacturer attempts to cut any kind of compatibility issues faced by the previous versions if any. What you ultimately get is a more compatible and stable OS.
