The primary power supply specifications are the voltage and current output parameters. In terms of the voltage, the power supply may be fixed or it may have a variable output. It is necessary to check whether the power supply has a fixed or variable output.

If the power supply has a fixed output there will be a small adjustment that can be made and it may be necessary to check that it can be adjusted to the required value if the voltage required is not exactly that quoted on the specification sheet. If the power supply ahs a variable range then it is necessary to ensure that it covers the required range.

In terms of the current it is necessary to ensure that the power supply will be able to provide the required level of current and have a degree of margin beyond that minimum requirement. When calculating the requirement for the power supply specification for current it is necessary to take account of what is termed the inrush current. This in-rush current occurs when an item is turned on and a large surge of current is drawn to charge up capacitors, etc. This inrush current can be several times the ordinary operating current.

The auto-shutdowns might be cause by a virus as well. Anything suspicious aside from automatic shutdowns after 2-3 hours?

yes shawnmilke , you are right , some virus " like sars" it can make auto -shutdows " sars give 30 sec., couz it make damedge with Services name "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)"
but automatic shutdown after 2-3 hours , that can return to bad way to have cooling system for your cpu like fan not work good , in chipst intel 945 and 965 , some kind o sencor , if proce., temp be over load its restart from it self to try to protect the proc.,

Sorry for the late reply. I've been busy with my day job

Anyway, you can check the wattage and amps of your power supply by opening your PC casing and checking the PSU unit. It's usually posted there. And yes, if your PSU keeps shutting down, it will eventually fail.

As for your other problem on the BIOS start up, that usually shows up when you change or install something that has not been properly set-up in the BIOS itself (usually installing a new hard drive or changing boot sequences). Try going to the bios set-up again and set it to "optimized default" that should sort things out (make sure all drives and hard disks are identified by the BIOS). If the date keeps restarting to 1 Jan 2003. It's time to change your motherboard battery.
